Finding an Icon: Passion,Persistence, and the Long Road to Fulfilling a Dream

Finding an Icon: Passion,Persistence, and the Long Road to Fulfilling a Dream

I was 16 years old, hanging on the fence at the Long Beach GP watching Niki Lauda race by at incomprehensible speeds (to a kid with a 1953 Jeep, anyway). The wail of his Ferrari 312T’s flat-twelve raised every hair. It was an unfamiliar rush. One that has never left, and is still the adrenaline chill I crave today.

I remember the day it rolled off the trailer. I couldn’t believe the car was here. THIS car. Dirty and worn, sure, but every bit as beautiful as in my childhood memories. I had to sit in it. Hold the steering wheel HE held. Imagine the Veglia tach sweeping toward 14,000 RPM. Snap the gated shifter through the gears. I could have stayed in the seat for hours.

Rennsport Reunion IV in Photos

Rennsport Reunion IV in Photos

Rennsport IV was undoubtedly the most spectacular gathering of Porsche cars I’ve ever witnessed. On the weekend of October 14-16, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca brought together an unprecedented number of significant automobiles. It was a Porsche enthusiast’s playground.

Do Want: FWDrag Edition

Do Want: FWDrag Edition

When it comes to cars, I love just about anything out-of-the-ordinary. So when we received an e-mail from Sal Cannistraci Jr. telling us about his 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP drag car I was intrigued, to say the least. Front wheel drive Grand Prix’s are not something I usually associate with reaction times and tire smoke.

Riding Dirty: Global RallyCross Twin Peaks

Riding Dirty: Global RallyCross Twin Peaks

Seems we’ve developed something of a reputation; Griot’s Garage likes clean cars. Fair enough. But when we recently had the chance to see high-horsepower rally cars battling door-to-door in the dirt, there was no way we were going to miss it. Armed with cameras and a love of anything that rolls (or flies) on rubber, we headed to the races.

’65 NASCAR Impala: A Barn-to-Track Story

’65 NASCAR Impala: A Barn-to-Track Story

Hard to believe it now, but there was a time when regular Joes could drive a Chevy off the lot and straight into NASCAR. In 1965, with the help of friends, Roy Mayne did just that. His Impala SS was campaigned in 14 Grand National Races, then quietly garaged. Fast-forward to June, 2010. The car surfaces on Ebay, and as the gavel falls, Shaun Coleman readies his own team of friends.

The E30 BMW M3 was a dominant force in late 1980’s racing. Winning more road races than any other in model history is quite a feat. Watch Patrick Snijers pilot this M3 in the Manx Rally. He is always close to the edge, but the car holds on. Videos like this make it easy to see why the E30 M3 was so great. Try to watch it just once… I dare you.
