Star Cars: The Ralph Lauren Car Collection

At one time or another, most of us have debated with friends how, if money was no issue, we’d fill our dream garages. For most, these answers rarely go beyond  that afternoon discussion. For a lucky few, one (or maybe two) of these dream machines might find their way to the garage. And then there is Ralph Lauren, whose collection seems hand-picked from the imaginations of car guys everywhere.

At first glance, you might think the word “garage” hardly applies to Lauren’s D.A.D. (named for his three children) Garage. Filled with classics from pre-war to present-day, each car is perfectly parked on its own pedestal, with precision a brain surgeon would envy. Maybe “museum” is more appropriate? The collection is certainly museum-quality (or beyond) and has made its way into world-famous displays not once, but twice. But Lauren insists it is a garage, since each car is fully operational and driven regularly. For what it’s worth, he’s got my vote of approval.

Once you get beyond the awe of the incredible storage and display of the cars and start looking at what is actually parked in there, it’s staggering! Bugatti, Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes… the list of marques is endless! Not only does the collection include a great number of manufacturers, it spans decades, genres, countries, race cars, one-offs… each restored to perfection. And all parked in one garage.

One of the unique aspects of Ralph Lauren’s cars is what he’s known for outside of the automotive world; design. Whether it’s using a color that is a few shades different from the original, or restoring it with higher quality materials, each car is finished to an elegant perfection that seems beyond what one could imagine.

Some day I’ll build my own list of The 100 Coolest Cars of All Time. Ever. When I do, I’ll start with Ralph Lauren’s collection and build from there. It is one of the crown jewels of the automotive world.
